Penile prosthesis is a device used to treat erectile dysfunction (the inability to achieve or maintain an adequate erection during sexual intercourse). This device is surgically placed to allow the penis to become erect. The point we need to underline is that it is the last step treatment option for erectile dysfunction. More information about penile prostheses:
Penile prostheses can be divided into two basic types:
One-piece (Non-Hydraulic or Semi-Rigid Implants): This type of prosthesis ensures that the penis is always in an erection position. The prosthesis is made of an elastic material and provides a permanent erection. It is manually raised up during intercourse and lowered down after intercourse ends. Removable dentures may be less costly due to their simple structure, but they must be worn for certain indications.
Multi-piece (2 or 3) (Inflatable Implants): Hydraulic prostheses use a fluid-filled cylinder to control erection. The prosthesis usually consists of two or three parts:
Cylinders: They are inserted into the penis and filled with fluid. When an erection is desired, fluid is pumped into the cylinders, causing the penis to harden.
Pumps: A pump placed in the scrotum (scrotum) pumps fluid into the cylinders. Storage Compartment: There is a reservoir where the liquid is stored and withdrawn.
Penile prosthesis placement surgery is usually performed under local or general anesthesia. The following steps are followed during the process:
Surgical incisions: The surgeon makes small incisions to insert the prosthesis, usually at the root of the penis or in the scrotum.
Prosthesis placement: The prosthesis is placed in the penis or scrotum. Postoperative stitches: Surgical incisions are closed and stitches are applied.
Penile prostheses provide strong and stable erections for men suffering from erectile dysfunction.
It can restore sexual activity and improve relationship quality.
Hydraulic prostheses allow the user to control erection at will.
It requires surgery and there is a post-operative recovery period.
After the prosthesis is placed, erections are achieved manually and spontaneous erections are not possible.
There may be infection or other complications after surgery.
Penile prosthesis can be an effective treatment option for men with erectile dysfunction, but this decision should be carefully considered with a specialist physician. The appropriate type of prosthesis and appropriate candidacy for surgery may vary depending on each patient’s specific needs and health status.
